Why House Dems may go easy on one of GOP's most vulnerable members

House Democrats appear to be showing some support for Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) as he fights to retain his key battleground seat, despite the significant spending advantage the GOP holds in his district. Lawler, a Republican, is running in a district that was carried by Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, and Democrats are wary of spending large amounts of money to defeat him, given his popularity among Republicans.

The New York City area, where Lawler is based, is the most expensive media market in the nation, making it costly to run television ads there. While Republicans have poured more than $40 million into ad reservations in Lawler's New York 17th District, Democratic efforts have been minimal, with only $270,000 reserved by House Majority Forward.

However, Democrats insist that their lack of ad spending is due to the high cost of the New York media market rather than any lack of interest in competing in the district. Lawler is seen as one of the most electorally savvy Republicans in Congress, and some Democrats believe that the GOP is simply trying to avoid spending a large sum of money for little return.

While Democrats have pledged to continue their efforts to defeat Lawler, it appears that they may be content with keeping him in office for now.
