WhatsApp platform offers easier access to jobs

South Africa's unemployment crisis forces many to struggle with finding work, not due to a lack of skills, but the costs and barriers associated with seeking employment. Limited mobile data, printing expenses, and travel costs for interviews prevent individuals, especially in rural areas, from applying for jobs that match their qualifications.

Despite a large talent pool and a stagnant economy, employers often find it difficult to identify suitable candidates. In response, Leànne Viviers founded Mintor in 2014, an AI-powered recruitment platform that connects job seekers and employers via WhatsApp, overcoming these challenges. The platform has assisted over 300,000 South Africans in finding employment while cutting the cost of job applications by up to 90%.

Employers using Mintor have reported up to ten times higher recruitment rates and an 80% improvement in hiring efficiency. During the pandemic, Mintor received support from the SAB Foundation, which helped them transition into a scalable software-as-a-service model. Viviers emphasizes that South Africa has the talent needed for economic growth, but the real challenge is ensuring equal access to employment opportunities for all.
