Vision 2060: Ruto hosts over 5,000 Kenyans for national conversation at KICC

President William Ruto convened a significant gathering of over 5,000 delegates representing Kenya's 47 counties at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on August 12, 2026. The purpose of this national conversation was to develop a robust long-term development plan aimed at transforming Kenya into a first-class nation by 2060.

Among the attendees was Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o, who chaired the committee responsible for crafting the proposed long-term development plan. Nyong'o acknowledged that while Vision 2030 had largely achieved its goals, certain targets proved challenging. He emphasized the need for a new development blueprint to guide Kenya beyond Vision 2030 and ensure sustainable growth for the upcoming decades.

Nyong'o stressed the importance of preserving the Vision 2060 framework from the impact of electoral cycles, advocating that successive governments should uphold the long-term plan and not abandon it during political changes or introduce new priorities that overshadow the existing national agenda. He emphasized that long-term development goals should remain steadfast despite changes in political leadership.

Nyong'o also highlighted global disruptions as a major challenge for Kenya, noting that international events have increasingly affected the country's normal operations and development trajectory. He suggested that by 2060, Kenya should be equipped to withstand such global shocks and maintain its development progress. The KICC dialogue was only the beginning of a broader public engagement process for Vision 2060.

Following the national dialogue, the proposed plan would be presented to all 47 counties, allowing citizens and other stakeholders to contribute their insights. The county consultations' outcomes would then be integrated into the final document before it is presented to the National Assembly and subsequently the Senate for consideration.

Upon completing legislative processes, the proposed development plan would be presented to the President for approval and implementation. The Vision 2060 framework was expected to provide Kenya with a robust long-term development roadmap capable of navigating political transitions, addressing global challenges, and guiding successive governments towards a unified national development agenda.
