Venezuela’s Oil Output Inches Up, but India Turns Away

Venezuela's oil output increased slightly in July to approximately 1.12 million barrels per day, according to OPEC-based figures. Other sources estimate production to be between 1.16 and 1.22 million barrels. The discrepancy arises from various measurement methods, with some counting condensates and gas liquids while others consider only the crude loaded onto tankers.

Despite the incremental gain, Venezuela's oil production remains a fraction of its former peak of over three million barrels daily. The decline is largely attributed to years of underinvestment, mismanagement, and stringent US sanctions. In July, India reduced its imports of Venezuelan crude to about 178,000 barrels per day, down from around 277,000 earlier in the year.

This significant reduction in demand is noteworthy, as Venezuela relies heavily on few buyers, including China. The US sanctions continue to pose significant challenges for Venezuela's oil trade, influencing payment complexities, buyer hesitance, and the need for discounted prices through intermediaries. Consequently, even an increase in output does not necessarily translate to higher revenue for Venezuela due to the prevailing market discounts.
