US lawmakers mull extending AGOA trade program

The African Growth and Opportunity Act, an agreement between the US and Africa, is set to be renewed for another two years after the Senate approved a government funding bill that includes the extension. However, the bill's passage through the House of Representatives is not guaranteed, and it may be altered or removed entirely, according to a former Hill staffer.

The Senate bill would prolong AGOA until 2028 without any changes. Despite this, the program is in conflict with the Trump administration's aggressive tariff policies. House representatives are expected to seek a deal that aligns with President Trump's trade agenda while also providing businesses with sufficient certainty to invest, which makes a straightforward two-year extension less probable.
