Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth echoed this sentiment, stating that Iran tried to kill Trump and that he got the last laugh.

The president's reaction to the secret plane swap, which involved moving him to a decoy aircraft due to credible intelligence of an Iranian missile threat, underscores the personal nature of the war and the threats to his safety. Past presidents have similarly taken covert measures when traveling in or near warzones, but Trump's secrecy has drawn extra scrutiny. The White House has provided little detail about the threat, but the operation demonstrates the lengths to which security teams will go to protect the president.

Trump has faced assassination attempts and threats in the past, including after his January 2020 missile strike that killed Qasem Soleimani. In 2022, the Biden administration warned Iran against targeting US citizens, and in July 2024, a Pakistani man, Asif Merchant, was arrested for plotting to kill Trump. An Afghani citizen, Farhad Shakeri, was also charged with an assassination scheme against the president.

Despite these attempts, Trump has remained vocal about his resolve to confront Iran, even going so far as to declare that 1,000 missiles are locked and loaded, ready to strike the Islamic Republic should it act on its threats.
