The 2026 Solar Eclipse Is Just the Beginning — How to Plan for the 2027 'Eclipse of the Century'

On Aug. 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will cross parts of Spain, Portugal, and Iceland, marking the first total eclipse in mainland Europe of the 21st century. However, the excitement is far from over, as experts predict a "Eclipse of the Century" on Aug. 2, 2027. This eclipse, visible in southern Spain and parts of the Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe, India, and Southeast Asia, will be the longest of the 21st century, with totality lasting an impressive six and a half minutes in eastern Egypt.

Only eclipses prior to 2009 have surpassed it in duration. NASA's calculations show that the eclipse's magnitude of 1.079 will be the largest of the century, outperforming all others. As we eagerly anticipate this celestial event, it's essential to remember that safety comes first. Never stare directly at the sun during an eclipse, but once totality is reached, it's safe to remove protective eyewear.

If missing both eclipses isn't an option, future total eclipses will still hold promise - a 2028 eclipse visible in Antarctica, Australia, and New Zealand, followed by another European eclipse in 2053.
