Thailand tightens gun controls after deadly school shooting

Bangkok, Thailand has taken immediate action to tighten its gun control measures following a devastating school shooting that left eight people dead and a 14-year-old boy dead by his own hand. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced on Tuesday that new gun permits will be suspended and existing permits will be re-examined, while welfare gun programs for public officials will also be halted.

Government agencies will now inspect gun dealers, verify sales records, and tighten ammunition controls at shooting ranges. The directive also calls for a more aggressive crackdown on illegal firearms and harsher penalties for offenders.

This shooting has brought attention to Thailand's high rate of civilian gun ownership, which is the highest in Southeast Asia, with approximately 15 guns per 100 people. The country's firearm death rate is also concerning, ranking second in the region only to the Philippines. Studies have consistently shown that easy access to firearms correlates with higher rates of gun-related deaths, including suicide, homicide, and unintentional injuries.

The Ministry of Education vowed to implement new safety protocols, including mental health screenings, emergency response drills, anti-bullying measures, and better detection of weapons on school grounds. The shooting has reignited discussions about gun control in Thailand, drawing comparisons to similar actions taken by other nations with high gun ownership rates, such as Serbia and New Zealand, which tightened regulations after similar incidents.

However, the United States remains an outlier in the world with high gun violence and mass shootings despite efforts for stricter laws.
