Texans Newcomer Looking to Break Disappointing Mold

Houston’s new running back, Woody Marks, aims to shake up the team's stale tradition of rotating in former stars every season. Since Lamar Miller's dual dominance from 2016 to 2018, the Texans have failed to identify a consistent running back to lead them for multiple years. Carlos Hyde, David Johnson, Rex Burkhead, Dameon Pierce, Devin Singletary, and Joe Mixon have all come and gone in recent years, with none establishing themselves as long-term solutions.

General manager Nick Caserio seems satisfied with this revolving door policy, often opting for veterans who are past their prime rather than making significant changes. However, this approach culminated in Marks' arrival this offseason. Standing at 5'11" and weighing 230 pounds, the 29-year-old amassed 1,070 rushing yards in 2019 and 939 in 2022. In 2026, he recorded 703 yards, suggesting he has the potential to surpass these numbers if given more opportunities.

Marks displayed impressive efficiency despite limited carries in 2025, ranking 17th in rushing yards per attempt and 17th in rushing touchdowns. If he were given additional carries akin to top options nationwide, he likely would have eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in each of the past three seasons. His willingness to take on more responsibilities could be crucial for the Texans' offense, particularly with the absence of his former teammate who provided a substantial workload.

With a restructured contract covering the next two years, Marks appears poised to become the Texans' long-term answer in the running back position.
