Taiwan is training its Abrams tank crews to hide and refuel inside its bustling urban sprawl

Taiwan recently acquired 108 Abrams tanks from the United States, marking a significant upgrade to its armored forces. In preparation for potential conflicts, particularly a hypothetical Chinese invasion, the Taiwanese military is training its Abrams tank crews to operate the powerful vehicles in urban environments. Over the weekend, a platoon of Abrams tanks, stationed near Taiwan's main airport, participated in drills designed to test their refueling capabilities amidst the bustling cityscape.

The training involved connecting an M978 Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck to the Abrams' Honeywell AGT1500 gas-turbine engine, a process completed within 15 minutes. Situated amidst a construction yard and overlooking a temple, the drill showcased the tank's adaptability to confined spaces, mirroring the complex urban terrain Taiwan must defend.

Military analysts suggest the Abrams tanks will likely serve as ambush weapons in densely populated areas, exploiting the island's mountainous and urban landscape to counter a PLA ground invasion.
