Student wounded and young suspect is in custody after shooting at Georgia high school, police say

Warnerville Robins High School witnessed a shooting on Wednesday, resulting in a wounded student and the apprehension of a teenage suspect, according to police reports. The incident transpired just one week into the academic year, triggering a swift response from multiple law enforcement agencies. The injured student was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening wounds, though the nature of the injuries has not been disclosed.

Sheriff Matt Moulton, speaking at an evening news conference, indicated the call received was one they had prepared for extensively. The location of the school remains undisclosed, but it is situated approximately 102 miles southeast of Atlanta. Moulton did not engage in post-event discussions, citing the ongoing investigation. He noted the altercation between two students inside a school bathroom, which escalated into a physical fight. One of the students was subsequently shot at 2:15 p.m., causing the suspect to flee the scene.

A school resource officer responded promptly, applying tourniquets to the victim's injuries until emergency services arrived on the scene. The suspect was subsequently apprehended in a neighborhood approximately half a mile away from the school, with no further complications. Sheriff Moulton commended the school's threat protocol and training, asserting that the incident was handled effectively, resulting in minimal harm.

Houston County Schools Superintendent Richard Rogers announced that the school would be closed for students on Thursday and Friday, and for staff on Thursday. Crisis counselors were scheduled to provide support to staff on Friday and students on Monday. Rogers emphasized the priority of focusing on healing.
