Many literary competitions now prohibit submissions that use artificial intelligence (AI). This is because organizers want to preserve the purity of creation and protect a writer’s unique ideas and emotions. However, in today’s world where AI is rapidly spreading throughout society, is it truly rational to exclude literature from this technology?

Just as computer and internet access, along with smartphones, were once feared to weaken human abilities but have since become essential tools, AI is also an extension of technological progress. In literature, AI should not replace writers but assist in the creative process. It can help with research, expanding ideas, composing drafts, and refining sentences.

Using AI can increase efficiency during the writing process. However, an AI-generated work is not automatically good. It is crucial to provide a clear prompt, which is like a design blueprint for the work, outlining what to write, the perspective, emotions to convey, writing style, and structure. The better the prompt, the better the AI-generated result.

For example, to write about a father's life, one might describe morning commute habits, worn-out shoes, cold early morning air, and crowded subways. Including one's personal experiences and perspective in the prompt allows AI to transform memories and emotions into meaningful sentences. Simply copying AI-generated text would not qualify as original creation.

But if a writer sets the theme and direction, uses their experiences and philosophy to create a draft with AI, and goes through multiple revisions to refine their style and thoughts, the work becomes distinct. Throughout literary history, new tools have continually evolved the field, from brushes and quills to typewriters and computers to the digital environment.

New tools have expanded rather than diminished human creativity. AI should also be viewed through this lens. Literary works should be judged based on the depth of thought, creativity, and personal contribution rather than merely whether AI was used or not. Rather than banning AI use outright, the focus should shift to limiting mindless copying and surrogate creation, while acknowledging human creativity in meaningful applications.

AI is a collaborative partner that aids in expanding thoughts, not a replacement for writers. The key is to prioritize human-centered creation, combining technology's strengths with human values. This is the direction literature should pursue in the AI era – emphasizing creativity above all else. By leveraging AI while keeping humans at the center, literature can achieve even greater heights.

AI is the key to unlocking new realms of imagination, enabling writers to broaden their horizons and craft more profound works.
