Spotify Will Stop Recommending AI Songs by Default

Spotify is set to introduce a "AI Persona" label for AI-generated artist accounts, which will be visible on their profiles and in search results starting mid-September. The labels will be applied to profiles that appear to be AI-generated, rather than relying solely on self-disclosure from artists. This decision comes after Spotify began accepting artist disclosures for AI-generated profiles.

The labels will initially be applied to artists meeting certain audience thresholds, with the goal of covering widely viewed profiles first. AI Persona artists will be excluded from Spotify's editorial playlists and algorithmic recommendations by default, and their tracks will also be removed from personalized recommendations unless the listener chooses to follow the AI Persona.

Users who tap the badge will be able to see how the artist disclosed the AI identity, either voluntarily or via Spotify's review process. Spotify acknowledges that the label pertains to the public identity of the artist, not the creation of the music itself. The company emphasizes that AI-specific information about tracks will remain separate, such as through AI Credits and SongDNA features.

Artists labeled as AI Personas will receive notifications and can either confirm or appeal the designation. Spotify plans to introduce a reporting feature in the coming months for listeners to flag suspected AI-generated profiles. This move expands Spotify's existing AI policies, which include disclosure requirements and prohibitions on unauthorized AI voice clones and vocal impersonations.

As Spotify develops AI-powered music features, the company aims to prioritize authentic human artists while minimizing spam, low-effort material, and AI-generated content.
