Spotify to slap 'AI Persona' badges on AI-generated artist profiles

Spotify is set to introduce "AI Persona" badges to some artist profiles starting mid-September, aiming to enhance transparency for listeners regarding the nature of the artists behind the music. The media streaming platform has noticed concerns over artist profiles that seem human but are actually AI-generated personas. Spotify plans to display the badge on banners, About sections, in Search, and on track rows within playlists.

Artists can now disclose their AI Persona status via Spotify for Artists, and the platform will review profiles with photorealistic AI-generated imagery. By default, AI Personas will be excluded from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless users follow them. Artists flagged by Spotify’s review team will be notified and offered the chance to self-disclose or appeal.

Listeners will be able to discern whether an artist has transparently identified as an AI Persona or if Spotify has identified the profile through its review process. The badge will be based on the artist's public identity, not the method used to create the music. Spotify emphasizes that the decision to flag an artist as an AI Persona is based on the artist's public identity and not on how the music was produced.
