Southeast Asia remains 'a clear priority' despite concerns over Trump tariffs: US envoy to ASEAN

US Ambassador to ASEAN Kevin Kim has reaffirmed the United States' commitment to continued economic and security engagement in the region, despite concerns over President Donald Trump's tariff policies. Speaking to CNA, Kim stated that Southeast Asia remains a "clear priority" for the United States government, as highlighted by the Trump administration's clear direction to deepen ties with the region.

Kim acknowledged the uncertainties surrounding Washington's trade policies, which have raised questions about their impact on US ties with ASEAN. He emphasized that the president seeks fair and reciprocal terms in trade agreements, stressing the importance of ensuring goods entering the US are not produced using forced labor.

The ambassador highlighted the substantial American investment in Southeast Asia, which exceeds US$500 billion and involves more than 6,000 American companies operating across the region. He explained that such investments help Southeast Asian countries diversify their supply chains and create jobs.

Regarding the South China Sea, Kim affirmed that negotiations over a Code of Conduct should remain between ASEAN and China, as the US does not participate in those discussions. However, he reiterated that the South China Sea remains crucial for US interests, emphasizing the importance of upholding international norms and treaty obligations to allies like the Philippines.

On Myanmar, Kim called for an end to violence and a return to dialogue among the parties involved, emphasizing the need to respect ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus framework for addressing the crisis. He stressed the US's desire to alleviate human suffering and foster dialogue among conflict parties.

Kim, who began his tenure as ambassador in June, reiterated the US's unwavering support for ASEAN, stating that the US is "with ASEAN 100 per cent" in terms of cooperation and assistance.
