South Africa seeks reimbursement from African countries for migrant repatriations

South Africa is seeking reimbursement from several African nations for the expenses incurred in repatriating tens of thousands of their citizens. This request follows the deportation and repatriation of over 80,000 immigrants, prompted by protests and violence against illegal immigration in South Africa. The Home Affairs department has allocated nearly $18 million to cover transportation, temporary repatriation centers, and additional staff costs.

The foreign ministry has written to Malawi, Ethiopia, and Nigeria, requesting compensation for the unforeseen and unavoidable expenses of the repatriation process. Some local authorities and government departments involved in the repatriation efforts are demanding compensation from the Home Affairs department, as the costs were not anticipated.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber described the recent volume of repatriations and deportations as unprecedented, noting that the departures have occurred amid heightened tensions over immigration in the country. Anti-illegal migration groups have organized protests and even attacked foreign nationals, straining relations with other African governments who blame migrants for high unemployment, crime, and strain on public services.
