Sonu Nigam reveals why he didn’t comment on CJP protests: ‘Promised my father I won’t’

Singer Sonu Nigam has a history of being vocal about various issues, including loudspeakers at religious places and the need for artists to receive royalties. However, when he was asked about his stance on protests against the CJP protests following the NEET paper leak, Sonu Nigam became irritated and said, "Abhi ho gaya bas." This response sparked backlash on social media.

In an interview with Bombay Times, Sonu Nigam explained his decision to stay silent during the protest. He stated that after three decades in Mumbai, he learned the importance of adhering to the agenda of an occasion and avoiding conversations that do not relate to the main topic. Sonu Nigam further explained that attending the tribute to his guru, Pankaj Udhas, meant he needed to focus on that subject rather than discuss unrelated political matters.

He also revealed that he had promised his father that he would not comment on anything he was not knowledgeable about. The singer has a track record of being vocal about various issues, such as his opposition to loudspeakers at religious places and advocating for performers' rights to royalties. He emphasized that he has been instrumental in bringing about changes in the system.

Sonu Nigam received criticism for his comments, with many accusing him of politicizing a tribute to his late guru. After the NEET paper leak, several celebrities, including Shabana Azmi, Seema Pahwa, Imran Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, and R Madhavan, protested the issue. Following the protests, education minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigned in accepting responsibility for the leak.
