Social Security Announces Disability Benefits Update For 14 New Conditions

On August 11, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announced an update to its disability benefits program, expanding the list of conditions that automatically qualify for expedited processing. This initiative, called Compassionate Allowances, enables the agency to quickly identify applicants with severe medical conditions that clearly meet its standards for disability benefits. The new expansion brings the total number of conditions on the list to 314.

SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano emphasized the agency's commitment to strengthening its disability programs and improving the disability determination process, stating that the Compassionate Allowances initiative helps deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need assistance promptly.

The 14 conditions added to the list are rare and serious medical disorders, often beginning in infancy or childhood and causing severe developmental, neurological, or physical impairments. Several of these conditions are inherited genetic diseases linked to seizures, intellectual disability, or abnormal brain development. Other conditions include aggressive and uncommon cancers affecting vital organs such as the heart, brain, eye, liver, and spleen.

Many of these illnesses are life-limiting, requiring intensive medical care and significantly restricting a person's ability to function independently.

Applicants can follow their disability claim through the my Social Security account, which displays the status of their application and any appeals. Since the program's inception, more than 1.2 million people with severe disabilities have been approved through the accelerated process. The SSA reported a 30% reduction in the initial disability backlog, decreasing from nearly 1.3 million pending cases in 2024 to about 853,000 as of August 11, 2026.

Moreover, the SSA revealed that initial disability decisions for both Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) were being issued 34 days faster in July 2026 compared to July 2025.
