Sedina Tamakloe release vindicates NPP’s selective justice concerns – Agyapa Mercer

Andrews Agyapa Mercer, a lawyer and member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has raised concerns about the fairness of Ghana’s justice system in light of the release of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) CEO, Sedina Christine Tamakloe-Attionu. Speaking on JoyNews’ Top Story, Mr Mercer stated that the release of Ms Tamakloe-Attionu serves to reinforce his belief that the government is selectively pursuing cases involving political opponents.

He went on to say that he was not surprised by the outcome, noting that it followed a pattern he had anticipated since the NDC came into power. Mr Mercer pointed out that an appeal had been filed in May 2024, but no action was taken until the case was re-listed. He also criticized the Attorney General for failing to file written submissions, citing the unavailability of certain parts of the proceedings at the time.

The Court of Appeal subsequently acquitted and discharged Ms Tamakloe-Attionu, following which the Attorney General announced plans to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court. Mr Mercer challenged Ghanaians to determine whether justice had been truly served or if the case reflected a pattern of political victimization. He urged them to decide whether the ends of justice had been met or whether it was merely politics where opponents of the governing party are targeted and taken through the legal process, while those aligned with the ruling party are let free.

Mercer emphasized that the NPP is not opposed to holding officials from the previous Akufo-Addo administration accountable for their actions. He reiterated that accountability should be applied fairly and consistently, regardless of one's political affiliation. However, he expressed concern when the law is applied selectively, creating the perception that members of the governing party are being protected while those of the opposition are being targeted.
