Republicans see Minnesota fraud scandal as a chance to go on offense in a blue state

According to sources, a fraud scandal that has gripped Minnesota state government has provided Republicans with a new opportunity to regain relevance in the state. It has been 20 years since a Republican won a statewide race in the Midwest state, but some Republicans believe the ongoing corruption will help them make a comeback.

Two women, Michele Tafoya and Lisa Demuth, recently won party primaries for governor and Senate respectively, and have already begun attacking Democrats over the scandal. Tafoya, a former sportscaster, said the fraud has energized voters. The scandal has led to dozens of convictions for stealing hundreds of millions of dollars meant for social services, such as food, shelter, healthcare and childcare.

Republicans have been largely playing defense as they try to keep their slim House and Senate majorities. However, they see Minnesota as a rare chance to go on the offensive. Democratic nominee for governor, Peggy Flanagan, is seen as vulnerable due to her contentious primary win and the fraud allegations. Republicans hope to exploit these weaknesses and portray the Democrats as unfit to govern.
