Remote location, reluctant parents: Madhya Pradesh battles odds amid outbreak that left 6 kids dead

Over the past month, six children have died and 100 others have fallen ill in remote villages of Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat district, dominated by the Baiga community. The health department only learned about the deaths after three children had already succumbed to their illness. Locating the children and convincing their parents to seek medical help proved to be a significant challenge.

This was due to the remote locations of the villages and the reluctance of families to disclose the cases, fearing their children would be admitted to hospitals. Some families even sought alternative treatments, such as faith healing. Health officials had to enlist the help of the police to transport the children to hospitals, as parents occasionally tried to take their children away before they were officially discharged.

The children, aged between one and 13, exhibited symptoms such as high fever, rashes, red spots, stomach pain, and ulcers. Blood samples have been sent to research institutions in Kolkata and Pune, while a team from Jabalpur Medical College is investigating the outbreak. Authorities have set up a medical post on a hilltop with two medical officers to monitor the cases and multiple temporary health camps have been established in the affected villages.
