Putin’s Visit Brings Cheaper Petrol and Freshly Fixed Roads to Siberia

During Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent visit to Novosibirsk, an unusual side effect of his presence was felt by locals – a sudden drop in petrol prices at certain filling stations. However, the reduction in prices was short-lived, as they returned to their usual rates once Putin departed. The city welcomed the President for a visit on Tuesday, where he toured new facilities at Novosibirsk State University.

Reports from Russian outlet Vot Tak indicate that petrol stations reportedly switched off their price displays and in some cases, even stopped selling fuel temporarily. Kristina S., a resident of Novosibirsk, shared her observations with Vot Tak, noting that "when the president passes through, gas prices go down, but as soon as he passes, they immediately go up by 20 rubles ($0.24)."

The visit coincided with Russia's ongoing struggle with fuel shortages and surging petrol prices, partly attributed to attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Fuel constraints had already led to restrictions on motorists in specific regions, resulting in lengthy queues outside gas stations. In addition to the fuel situation, Putin's journey prompted a wave of security and infrastructure measures across Novosibirsk.

Authorities also carried out road repairs and landscaping ahead of Putin's visit, which prompted a resident to sarcastically remark, "I wish [Putin] had just toured Russia nonstop. At least they'd fix the roads." Security precautions were not limited to the presidential route; Novosibirsk State University saw the closure of the cafeteria and swimming pool, along with restricted student movements. Some residents were even instructed to cover their windows, while electric scooter rentals faced a temporary halt.
