Putin threatens retaliation as Europe tightens grip on Russia’s shadow fleet

Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to retaliate against European countries that seize Russian merchant vessels suspected of helping Moscow evade sanctions. This warning intensifies the ongoing conflict between Russia and Europe over the tightening grip on Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" of ships. The EU has been expanding restrictions against hundreds of ships and detaining vessels and their crews for inspections, while some countries have already imposed seizures.

Putin cautioned that any seizure of Russian ships would be considered piracy and could trigger a broader Russian response, which may not be limited to the waters where the vessels are seized. He stated that retaliatory action could occur wherever deemed necessary and appropriate. Putin's remarks came as he observed military exercises on Russia's far eastern Sakhalin island.

He also accused NATO of expanding its presence in the Asia-Pacific, forming new military-political blocs, and deploying weapons systems that pose a threat to Russia.

The tension between Russia and Europe over sanctions enforcement and maritime security continues to escalate. Both sides are grappling with the challenges of maintaining trade routes while adhering to Western-imposed restrictions on Russian oil and other commodities.
