Preschool teacher charged with sexual assault of 8-year-old pupil

A preschool teacher in Malaysia was brought before the Sessions Court and charged with sexually assaulting an 8-year-old male pupil, according to prosecutors. The accused, Muhamad Shazali Sharipudin, 42, declined to plead guilty when the charges were presented to him by judge Tasnim Abu Bakar. The alleged incidents occurred inside a classroom at a school in Rembau on April 1 and 3, with the accused allegedly committing the acts at 10am and 9am respectively.

Sharipudin faces charges under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which prescribes a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and whipping. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Balkis Zunaidi set bail at RM20,000, with conditions including a RM8,000 cash deposit and restrictions on harassment of the victim or witnesses, regular reporting to a police station, and surrender of his passport.

Sharipudin's defense lawyer, Syed Amirul Syed Edros, requested a lower bail amount, emphasizing the defendant's 17-year tenure as a civil servant preschool teacher, earning income of RM4,000 per month, single status, and support for his ailing mother. He also stated that Sharipudin has been reassigned to the Rembau district education office and no longer teaches at the school, thus presenting no flight risk.

The court granted bail at RM8,000 for both charges, with additional conditions. The case is scheduled for further proceedings on September 15.
