Police bar Amotekun, vigilantes from Osun gov poll

The Nigeria Police Force has prohibited vigilante groups, non-state security outfits, and the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun, from participating in security operations during the upcoming Osun State governorship election on August 15, 2026. The police issued a statement, warning that these groups have no role in securing the election and are barred from escorting electoral materials, guarding polling units, or bearing arms.

Any unauthorized security outfits involved in election-related activities would face arrest and prosecution. The police emphasized the need for a peaceful election, warning of consequences for any violent or intimidating behavior, including ballot snatching, voter intimidation, vote buying, and clashes between supporters. Election security is the responsibility of constitutional security agencies, and the police assured that all 30 Local Government Areas of Osun State would be secured by authorized personnel.

The Inspector-General of Police directed all personnel to act professionally and adhere to the rule of law and human rights.
