PM admits cost of living help is not enough and hints at further support

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has admitted his recent cost of living announcements are insufficient and hinted at further support. He told BBC's Wake up to Money that he will deliver a series of smaller measures that will collectively ease the strain on household budgets. Burnham discussed overhauling train fares, increasing public control over energy, water and housing, but did not provide specifics on implementing these changes.

Since becoming Prime Minister, he has made several cost of living announcements, including removing VAT from domestic electricity bills and ending subscription traps. Asked if his actions were enough, Burnham acknowledged the criticism that they were not enough, stating he would take minor steps to alleviate pressure. He emphasized the need for public control over essential services such as water, energy and housing, stating it could lead to a more substantial solution to the cost of living crisis.

Burnham also mentioned the possibility of reversing the privatization of water companies in England and Wales. The government recently announced a £250 annual discount on bills for people living near upgraded electricity pylons and substations. Burnham mentioned that Chancellor John Healey has been asked to focus on cost of living issues in the upcoming Budget, and Healey has pledged to oversee strong fiscal discipline.

Burnham's party, Labour, pledged not to increase taxes for working people, and he has committed to upholding this pledge.
