Op Chick: MACC busts illegal China frozen chicken import ring in Sabah, three nabbed

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has dismantled a ring suspected of illicitly importing frozen chicken from China into Sabah, allegedly through bribes to port authorities, according to Sinar Harian. According to a source, the Malaysian daily reported that 10 containers of frozen chicken suspected to have been imported illegally from China were seized on Tuesday morning as part of Operation Chick.

Carried out by the MACC’s Intelligence Division alongside the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) and Royal Malaysian Customs Department, the operation revealed that the containers had been falsely declared and bypassed necessary inspections. Three men ranging in age from their 30s to 50s, including forwarding agents and a company manager, were apprehended following the operation.

The MACC is reportedly pursuing additional individuals involved in the case. MACC chief commissioner Datuk Sri Abd Halim Aman confirmed the operation and arrests to Sinar Harian, stating that the three suspects would face the Kota Kinabalu Magistrates’ Court for a remand application to aid investigations. The case is under investigation pursuant to Section 17 of the MACC Act 2009.
