On their 18th birthday, a letter from the Rajasthan CM Bhajan Lal Sharma — and a nudge to vote

Rajasthan's Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma has embarked on an innovative campaign to engage the younger generation by sending personalized birthday messages to individuals turning 18 years old. Launched in July, these physical letters have reached approximately 80,000 recipients across the state, according to an official. The primary objective is to encourage young people to register as voters in the world's largest democracy.

The Hindi-language letter congratulates the recipient on reaching the age of majority and emphasizes their newfound social responsibility, rights, and opportunities. It also references Prime Minister Narendra Modi's belief that a strong youth is vital for a prosperous nation and urges the young person to participate actively in the electoral process.

The letter, signed by the Chief Minister and featuring the Rajasthan state emblem along with photos of the CM and PM, is distributed through a dedicated cell within the CM's office. Officials revealed that the information used to identify the beneficiaries primarily comes from departmental records. This initiative follows a recent wave of protests at Jantar Mantar, which raised concerns for the ruling BJP.

Political analyst Tribhuvan noted that while the gesture is positive, the party must address the broader issues of Gen Z. With Gen Z accounting for 25.8% of India's population, as projected by the 2011 Census, the BJP views this campaign as a strategic move. The party has a history of launching similar initiatives; for instance, Education Minister Madan Dilawar had a comparable campaign in 2003.

With the BJP trailing by just 0.53% in the 2018 Assembly elections, initiatives like these letters could be instrumental in securing additional seats in the 2028 polls.
