Nonu, 44, performs solo haka in response to All Blacks

Ma a Nonu, a revered New Zealand rugby player at 44, paid tribute to the All Blacks by performing a solo haka, Kapa o Pango, during their pre-match ceremony in Durban. This act followed the All Blacks' imposing Ka Mate haka, marking a unique display of respect between the two rugby powerhouses. Nonu, who has been part of the New Zealand team since 2003, played 104 matches for his country, including victories in the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups.

Initially joining the Sharks to mentor young players, Nonu's tenure was marred by injuries and Springbok call-ups. He opted to step onto the field during the pre-match ritual to express his admiration for the All Blacks and offer his respect. Nonu was honored with a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2016 for his contributions to rugby.

All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie informed Nonu about the planned solo haka, and he confirmed his intention to perform it after consulting with the team. Sharks coach JP Pietersen acknowledged Nonu's significant off-field contributions and shared his nervousness about performing the solo haka. The All Blacks and the Springboks are set to clash in a series dubbed the "Greatest Rivalry," with a total of four Tests scheduled over the next four weeks, including matches against the Stormers, Bulls, Lions, and the concluding Springbok Tests in Baltimore, USA.
