Nick Reiner could face death penalty if convicted of murdering parents

A Los Angeles County grand jury has indicted Nick Reiner on murder charges for the killings of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. According to prosecutors, Nick Reiner was allegedly lying in wait before attacking his parents. The grand jury, which had been meeting in secrecy, returned the indictment on July 20 and unsealed it on August 12.

Nick Reiner, 32, entered a not guilty plea two days later. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, as well as his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, a photographer and producer, were stabbed to death in their upscale Brentwood home on December 14 last year. Nick Reiner was arrested hours after the murders and charged two days later.

The grand jury indictment is a significant step towards trial, as it allows prosecutors to bypass California's preliminary hearing process. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman expressed hope that the indictment would bring them closer to a trial and justice. The indictment reveals the allegation of lying in wait and using a knife in the killings, making Nick Reiner eligible for the death penalty, though prosecutors have not decided whether to pursue it.

Many basic questions about the case remain unanswered, including the motive and the manner of the killings. The Los Angeles County chief medical examiner has expressed a desire to make the autopsy reports public, but a court order has prevented him from doing so. Nick Reiner's legal team, the LA County Public Defender's Office, has declined to comment on the indictment.
