New Mahindra ‘Pik Up’ bakkie teased ahead of imminent reveal

Mahindra has unveiled the first official teaser clip and reveal date for its highly anticipated new pickup truck, under the Global Pik Up designation. This concept, previously referred to as the Scorpio X, has now been renamed Scorpio-N Pik Up. The teaser was showcased during the company's annual Independence Day celebration in Cape Town three years ago, although the official name has yet to be announced.

According to Mahindra's Product Development and Technology President, R Velusamy, the Pik Up will share a platform with the Scorpio-N but differs significantly in terms of suspension and dimensions. Key differences include a distinct wheelbase, suspension architecture, and front and rear overhangs. The teaser clip, which lasts just 40 seconds, reveals that the Global Pik Up/ Scorpio-N Pik Up will be based on the recently facelifted normal Scorpio-N, with the addition of a loadbox.

The pickup will offer single and double cab bodystyles, with a notably different interior compared to the Scorpio-N. The infotainment display will be in a portrait-style layout, similar to the Ford Ranger, while the steering wheel and dashboard center console design are also unique. The vehicle will be powered by the same engines as the Scorpio-N, including the 2.0-litre mStallion turbocharged petrol engine and the 2.2-litre mHawk turbodiesel.

Velusamy hinted at the possibility of an increased torque output for the mHawk, claiming it can reach up to 450 Nm.

Currently, the Global Pik Up/ Scorpio-N Pik Up makes 128kW/400Nm in its most powerful configuration, with a six-speed automatic gearbox in four-wheel drive versions. However, the company has ruled out the possibility of introducing specialized variants like the Ford Ranger Raptor and Toyota Hilux GR Sport, focusing instead on the value and high-volume segments. Additionally, all models will come with a 3,500 kg tow rating, regardless of the chosen bodystyle.

Internally known as the Z121, the Global Pik Up/ Scorpio-N Pik Up is set to make its world debut on 14 August during the Independence Day celebration in Mumbai, an event The Citizen will be covering. The executive expects to announce all the details during this event.
