NCAA plans RFID baggage tracking across Nigerian airports

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) plans to implement RFID baggage tracking across Nigerian airports to enable real-time monitoring of checked luggage for air passengers. This initiative was announced by Michael Achimugu, NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, through his official X account. The technology aims to enhance baggage handling procedures and resolve baggage-related complaints by providing accurate tracking for passengers and airlines.

Achimugu revealed that the NCAA held meetings with domestic airlines, aviation service providers, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in Lagos to finalize the plans for the migration to RFID baggage tagging. The technology, currently in use globally, will offer passengers the ability to track their luggage from check-in until arrival at their destination.

Achimugu emphasized that proper implementation would boost baggage-handling efficiency, facilitate the resolution of complaints, and improve overall passenger satisfaction. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has given his approval for relevant agencies to evaluate the innovation and provide a report.

As part of this initiative, FAAN and Verxid are set to conduct nationwide sensitization campaigns, live Proof of Concept demonstrations, and technical site assessments before the full rollout. This move aligns with broader technology-driven projects undertaken by Nigerian aviation agencies to enhance passenger experience, airport security, and operational efficiency.

Additionally, the RFID baggage tracking initiative is part of FAAN’s digital transformation agenda, while the NCAA's plan focuses specifically on improving the handling and visibility of checked luggage. The project will also extend to cargo operations, with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) planning to deploy cargo scanners at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

The scanners await final regulatory approval, and the NCS has recommended the installation of traffic management officers and CCTV cameras near the scanning areas. This initiative is part of the NCS’ broader efforts to modernize cargo inspection, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen border security through technological advancements.
