The season had been challenging for Swiatek, as she had not reached a WTA final prior to Thursday, having lost in the Australian Open quarterfinals to Rybakina. She had advanced to the fourth round at the French Open and the third round at Wimbledon. Despite the recent difficulties, Swiatek expressed her happiness with the win, attributing it to her ongoing efforts to improve her game despite the constant criticism she faced online.

Swiatek dominated the match, winning the first two games and subsequently three consecutive games to seal the first set. Rybakina, representing Kazakhstan, managed only one ace and four double faults, hitting a mere 13 winners and committing 23 unforced errors. Rybakina conceded, "I tried my best but it wasn't enough." The victory highlighted Swiatek's ability to defeat one of the sport's elite players, acknowledging Rybakina's formidable competitiveness.

She praised Rybakina, vowing that more intense matches lay ahead in their ongoing rivalry. In other matches on Thursday, Taylor Townsend of the Cincinnati Open secured a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win over Colombia's Camila Osorio, while Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez overcame a match point to beat Australia's Daria Kasatkina 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3.
