Nailed it: Toolstation gives its store IT an ASUS NUC refurb

Toolstation, a UK retailer specializing in trade and DIY products, recently upgraded its in-store point-of-sale (POS) terminals to improve customer service and operational efficiency. The POS systems, which staff use to check stock, answer questions, and close sales, needed to keep pace with the company's rapid growth and increasing online sales.

Previously, the POS terminals were running on aging Linux-based hardware that had become slow, difficult to patch, and challenging to support across the extensive branch network. This led to security concerns and operational inefficiencies, as the outdated systems could not receive security patches or antivirus updates.

To address these issues, Toolstation decided to refresh its entire technology estate, including contact centers, warehouses, distribution hubs, and its network of branches. The retailer opted for a Google Chrome ecosystem and sought hardware capable of running that model at the till. The ASUS NUC 13 mini-PC was selected for its compact size, performance, and ability to fit under the counter without interfering with stock handling.

The 13th Gen Intel Core i3 processor in the NUC 13 provided optimal performance for store workflows, enabling Toolstation to expand its software choices and build a workstation environment rather than simply replacing outdated PCs.
