Montreal police chief says change will take time amid racism allegations

Montreal police Chief Fady Dagher acknowledged a "shame" sentiment within the force amid serious allegations of racism, discrimination, and harassment. The public was given the opportunity to question Dagher for the first time at a special meeting Tuesday night at Montreal City Hall. Concerns about racism and discrimination in Montreal North have been expressed by residents for over a decade, culminating in the dismantling of a 16-member patrol unit in June due to allegations of racist and abusive conduct.

Dagher expressed shock and disappointment at the gravity of the behavior exhibited by some officers, stating it was "shocking" and "extremely disappointing." However, many remain concerned that the June events are merely the latest in a series of mistrust between law enforcement and the multicultural community of Montreal North.

Erika Alneus, chief of the official opposition at city hall, commented that people are "sick and tired of being sick and tired." Dagher acknowledged the difficulty in understanding the animosity, but did not rule out the possibility of extremism and white supremacy. He emphasized that the police department must reevaluate what went wrong and why, as it is a reflection of society.

The issue requires involvement from the entire city, with both police and city politicians and boroughs playing a role in finding solutions. Dagher also confirmed that two files involving three officers have been sent to Quebec's prosecution service.
