Millions travel to Spain to witness first total solar eclipse in more than a century

Millions of tourists are flocking to Spain to witness Spain's first total solar eclipse in over a century, according to The Guardian on August 12. Esteemed astronomer and science communicator César González described the upcoming celestial event as "one of the best spectacles in nature." Officials predict that as many as 6 million people could visit Spanish towns and villages along the eclipse path, which stretches approximately 200 kilometers from Spain’s northwest to the Mediterranean island of Mallorca.

The total solar eclipse will last less than two minutes, making it a rare and special occurrence that has drawn significant attention.

Tourists, astronomy enthusiasts, and dedicated eclipse chasers have meticulously planned their travel routes months in advance to secure optimal viewing spots. Online forums have been buzzing with discussions about potential cloud cover and tips for the best locations to witness the event. Hotels in the region have reported bookings made well in advance, with over 460,000 people having traveled to Spain to observe the celestial alignment.

Angela Jones Riekst, from Halifax, Canada, is among the eclipse chasers who journeyed to Burgos with her 21-year-old daughter. Riekst, who witnessed her first total solar eclipse two years ago in Canada, described the experience as "awestruck" and "almost like God's eye staring back at me from heaven." The interest in the eclipse has skyrocketed, with many opticians and pharmacies running out of solar eclipse glasses, and Iberia, the Spanish airline, planning to share live images from a charter flight 10 kilometers above sea level.
