Lawyer seeks Fadahunsi’s prosecution, faults release

Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has criticized the release of Osun East Senator, Francis Fadahunsi, following his questioning by the police over threatening remarks in a viral video. Effiong called on the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to prosecute the senator, asserting that his comments could escalate political tensions ahead of the Osun State governorship election.

The lawyer expressed dissatisfaction with the Osun State Police Command's decision to release Fadahunsi without further action, stating that it demonstrates bias and unwillingness to take further action against the senator. Effiong argued that the senator's remarks "heightened the already tense political atmosphere in the state, which may lead to a breakdown of law and order and negatively affect voter turnout in the forthcoming election."

He emphasized that the statement could also influence the electoral process by allegedly inciting support for opposing political parties and scaring voters from casting their ballots. Effiong urged the Inspector-General of Police to immediately arraign Fadahunsi in court to demonstrate impartiality and uphold the law, warning that failure to do so could undermine public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and embolden political actors to engage in threats and violence during political engagements.
