Lar gibbon linked to Indian actor Vikram traced to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: An investigation involving Indian actor Vikram has traced a lar gibbon to Malaysia, where it was listed as originating. The gibbon had been at the center of controversy after a video surfaced of Vikram playing with and hugging the protected animal, sparking criticism. The Chennai Wildlife Warden reported that the gibbon has since been relocated from the residence of businessman C.K.

Ranganathan in Injambakkam, India, to Erode. Records indicate the gibbon's journey began in Manipur before arriving in Erode, with Malaysia being their final recorded country of origin. District forest officer K.V. Appala Naidu stated that two gibbons, a male and a female, were discovered at Ranganathan's premises. He expressed the need to confirm whether the animals had indeed passed away or if they were transferred without proper documentation.

Sources suggest Ranganathan acquired the gibbons from Keshavanathan, though the transfer certificate remains unapproved by authorities. The Chief Wildlife Warden is leading an investigation into the origin of the animals and whether all legal requirements for their possession and transfer were adhered to. The lar gibbon, scientifically known as Hylobates lar, is classified under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.
