July Was Deadliest Month for Civilians in Ukraine Since 2022, Monitoring Group Says

July proved to be the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since 2022, according to the Conflict Intelligence Team (CIT). The monitoring group reported that at least 634 civilians were killed in July due to Russian and Ukrainian strikes on civilian infrastructure, a significant increase from the 451 deaths recorded in June. This surge represents an average of over 20 civilian deaths per day, marking the deadliest period in over two and a half years.

The CIT's data, primarily based on official statements, media reports, and visual evidence, indicates that about 30% of those killed were in Russian territory or areas occupied by Russian forces. Additionally, the group's report from early August noted that a further 4,590 people were injured in July. These figures are part of CIT's estimation that at least 2,491 civilians have lost their lives in mutual strikes during the first seven months of 2026, surpassing the total of 2,919 civilian deaths recorded throughout 2025, which was the deadliest year for civilians since the war started, excluding 2022.

The year 2025 saw a 12% rise in civilian deaths compared to 2024, while the number of injured individuals increased by more than 25%. The United Nations also confirmed that July was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since March 2022, with 4,313 confirmed deaths recorded. Despite its diligent efforts, CIT acknowledges that its monitoring does not encompass every single civilian casualty or injury caused by shelling and drone attacks, and it does not include deaths resulting from attacks targeting military installations.
