John Brittas vs Sushmita Dev ‘lungiwala’ row escalates as BJP MP moves privilege notice against CPI(M) leader

The dispute between CPI(M) leader Sushmita Dev and BJP MP John Brittas escalated on Wednesday when Brittas filed a breach of privilege notice against Dev. This occurred after Brittas claimed a member from the ruling party made derogatory remarks about his attire during his speech on Monday, labeling him as "lungi-wala." Brittas emphasized his pride in being a proud Indian, South Indian, and Malayali, expressing appreciation for Malayali culture, language, cuisine, and attire.

Brittas alleged that a member of the House, without naming the BJP MP, disrupted him while he was presenting a statutory resolution. The verbal altercation persisted, with Brittas stating that Dev repeatedly referred to him as "lungi-wala." Dev responded by asserting that neither she nor any other member has disparaged any state's attire.

She offered to discuss the matter privately with Brittas. BJP president JP Nadda suggested both members meet in his chamber to resolve the misunderstanding. Chairman CP Radhakrishnan intervened, stating that members should refrain from disrespectful and undignified comments during speeches, as his chamber had received complaints about such behavior.

Radhakrishnan invited the concerned members to his chamber for clarification. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju called for Dev to provide a written response, arguing that both members should be granted an opportunity to state their positions on record, given Brittas's statement had been documented. The chairman agreed to speak with both MPs, while the ruling side insisted Dev also be given a chance to express her side on record.

Leader of the House JP Nadda reaffirmed the ruling side's respect for all state attire, including calling it "dhoti" instead of "lungi," while also requesting Dev to present her account. However, the chairman adjourned the House until 2 pm.
