IYD 2026: Youths Must Become Custodians of Nigeria’s Democracy, Says FCC Chairman, Omidiran

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Mrs. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, has urged Nigeria's youth to step up from being mere recipients of democracy and become active participants, guardians, and architects of the nation's democratic destiny. Mrs. Omidiran's message, delivered by the Federal Commissioner for Enugu State in the FCC, Hon.

Peter Ogbonna Eze, came during a gathering organized by the Nigeria Youth Organization which focused on the role Nigerian youths play in preserving the nation's democratic gains. Mrs. Omidiran highlighted the theme as crucial and essential for Nigeria's future, emphasizing that the long-term success of the country's democracy depends heavily on the commitment, integrity, involvement, and leadership of the younger generation.

She stressed that Nigerian youths are endowed with the necessary age, creativity, innovation and intellectual acumen to steer national development. Mrs. Omidiran noted that democracy extends beyond mere elections and requires respect for the rule of law, accountability, tolerance, peaceful participation, responsible citizenship, and the protection of fundamental rights.

She urged Nigerian youths to shun violence, hate speech, misinformation, and any activities that could undermine democratic institutions and unity. The FCC boss also commended the Nigeria Youth Organization for endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, viewing it as a testament to the organization's belief in the importance of continuity, stability, and the consistent execution of government policies and projects.

Mrs. Omidiran stressed the significance of equity, inclusion, and fairness for the sustenance of Nigeria's democracy, asserting that these principles are at the heart of the commission's mandate. She called on young Nigerians from all walks of life to have equal access to opportunities, asserting that fair inclusion would boost their confidence and dedication to nation-building.

Mrs. Omidiran encouraged youths to take the lead in constructive dialogue with government and democratic bodies, urging them to not only demand accountability but also offer ideas, propose solutions, and accept responsibility for the country's progress. She praised the Nigeria Youth Organization for providing platforms to equip young Nigerians with civic knowledge, leadership skills, and opportunities to meaningfully contribute to governance.

Mrs. Omidiran reiterated that the future of Nigeria cannot be achieved by government alone, but necessitates a continuous partnership among government, civil society, communities, and Nigeria's youth. She urged young Nigerians to actively engage in democratic processes, interact constructively with government, innovate, and lead responsibly, stating that their vitality should become a force for peace, creativity a catalyst for development, and leadership a route to a more united and prosperous Nigeria.
