Israeli settlers keep up siege of Palestinian homes in West Bank after clashes with troops

Israeli settlers have maintained a blockade of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, following clashes with Israeli military forces. The siege began on Sunday, when settlers erected a makeshift tent near homes in the village of Qusra, south of Nablus, blocking access to essential supplies. Israeli troops intervened to remove the tent, leading to a rare confrontation between settlers and the military. The settlers claim they have received electricity through solar panels, but have been without food and medical provisions.

Abu Rida, a trapped Palestinian resident, expressed frustration over the lack of aid, stating that the settlers were still present despite the military's withdrawal. The Israeli military has now deployed additional troops to restore order and prevent further incidents. The chief of the general staff directed efforts to strengthen control in the area and take disciplinary action against security personnel involved in the incident.

International law prohibits Israeli settlements and outposts in the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967. Over 500,000 Israelis live in these illegal settlements among a population of three million Palestinians. Since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023, at least 1,097 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers, according to AFP data. Israeli figures report at least 48 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in the same period.

Recently, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced plans to allow more settlements in the West Bank. The Israeli military has condemned the settlers' actions and declared the area a closed military zone, removing the tent on Wednesday morning. However, the settlers remain present, continuing to besiege the Palestinian residents.
