Iraq says September 30 withdrawal deadline for US-led coalition ‘final’

DUBAI — Despite ongoing tensions, Iran and the United States continue to be at odds in their attempts to revive the interim peace deal signed in June, according to a senior Iranian source. The source revealed that no progress has been made in discussions aimed at instituting a timeframe for the deal's implementation. This latest development adds to the woes of resolving the crisis, which was exacerbated by fresh attacks on shipping in the region on Tuesday.

The interim deal from June called for an immediate and permanent halt to military operations across all fronts, but this agreement was quickly abandoned. U.S. President Donald Trump declared the deal "over" on July 7, while Iran's foreign ministry announced a week later that the deal had been "suspended." The United States claims that Iran has failed to adhere to the terms of the deal, specifically in reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping route.

Iran, on the other hand, asserts that the U.S. has breached its commitments, including lifting a blockade on Iranian ports and releasing frozen Iranian assets. One of the key issues under discussion through mediators is the U.S. rejoining the interim agreement and establishing a timeline for its execution.
