IPTS student charged with murder after alleged drunk-driving incident in Kuala Langat

A 23-year-old student of the private higher education institution (IPTS) was charged in Kuala Langat's Telok Datok Magistrates' Court on August 12 with murdering an 78-year-old man. N. Vishwesh appeared before Magistrate Maslinda Selamat and nodded in agreement to the charge but no plea was recorded as murder cases are under the High Court's jurisdiction.

The incident occurred at about 7.20pm on August 7 when the accused allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol and caused the death of Eng Kim Kheng @ Ng Kim Swee in Kuala Langat district. Prosecutors claim the crime falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which allows for the death penalty or a prison term between 30 and 40 years, or whipping of at least 12 strokes if the death penalty is not imposed.

The accused was represented by T. Mishant and did not receive bail, with the court setting a mention date for October 1. The court heard a viral video of the accident at the Kanchong Bengkok traffic light intersection in Banting, where the accused claimed to have been driving under the influence of alcohol while another man was seen lying injured on the road.
