Indian hockey’s heavy lifter: Sushila Chanu’s decade at the top and still here

Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, a veteran of 262 caps in Indian women's hockey, remains active and influential a decade after her Rio Olympics' captaincy. Hailing from humble beginnings, she started playing hockey while working at Mumbai's railway stations. Over time, she has witnessed the sport's evolution, witnessing the emergence of better facilities, a more professional environment, and improved player understanding.

Sushila's role has evolved from teaching basics to guiding skilled players, and the team culture has shifted towards a more friendly approach. As a side-back initially, she has played several positions, currently focusing on center-back. Once a captain, she emphasizes that the responsibility remains the same, and her leadership is evident through constructive feedback on the field.

Despite facing numerous injuries and low points, including being left out of several squads, Sushila persevered by working harder. Her dedication has paid off, with memorable moments like leading India's junior team to bronze in the World Cup and guiding them to the Olympics. As she steps into another World Cup alongside fellow veteran Salima Tete, Sushila remains committed to the sport and to her team, driven by her desire to keep her parents happy.
