I tried spraying vanilla water at my front entrance to mask odors — here’s what happened

I recently decided to give the latest viral home hack a try, which involves creating a vanilla-infused spray to mask unpleasant odors at my front entrance. This budget-friendly solution utilizes a common household ingredient that I likely use quite frequently. The concept is simple: by spraying the fragrant water around the entrance, it's hoped that a pleasant aroma will greet both myself and any guests entering the home.

To create this spray, I gathered a few basic supplies – a spray bottle, water, and vanilla essence. I filled the bottle with 1 cup of water, then added ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract, shaking well to ensure the solution was thoroughly mixed. After shaking, I set about spraying the solution around my entranceway, both inside and outside of the front door. I was careful not to spray directly onto wallpaper, as it could potentially cause damage.

When it came to testing the effectiveness of the vanilla water spray, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. According to scientific sources, vanilla contains vanillin, the compound responsible for its distinctive flavor and aroma. While it does have sedative properties and can help alleviate anxiety, I wanted to see if it could actually eliminate or mask odors.

Upon spraying the vanilla solution around my entrance, I found that it did indeed create a pleasant aroma, but it didn't actually eliminate the odors present. Instead, it seemed to work by overwhelming our olfactory receptors, effectively masking the unwanted smells such as spoiled eggs, pet urine, and garbage. Notably, vanilla is widely recognized as the world's favorite flavor and fragrance, making it a popular choice for room sprays.

In terms of safety, a homemade solution of water and vanilla is an excellent choice as it doesn't contain any harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that might be present in other aerosol sprays or scented candles. Based on my experience, I would consider this homemade vanilla water spray as my preferred option for creating a pleasant ambiance when expecting guests or trying to sell my property.

However, if truly wanting to eliminate bad odors, other methods such as using baking soda or investing in an air purifier with an activated carbon filter may be more effective.
