Hong Kong’s tech index plans expansion with AI and robotics themes

Hong Kong's principal tech stock index is set to broaden its scope, incorporating artificial intelligence and robotics themes in an effort to reflect industry shifts, according to the firm that manages it. Established in 2020, the Hang Seng Tech Index currently tracks the 30 most prominent tech companies publicly listed in Hong Kong. With assets under management totaling US$40.4 billion, the benchmark has announced plans to increase the number of constituent companies to 50.

The index's management team has revealed that the existing six tech themes will be revised to include artificial intelligence and robotics, alongside digital platforms, advanced hardware, cloud services, and frontier technology. "As Hong Kong's technology sector continues to expand, the proposed changes seek to broaden technology theme coverage, refine constituent selection, and augment the number of constituents, ensuring the index remains representative of the evolving tech landscape," the company stated.

In addition to the expanded themes, the number of sub-themes will also rise from 16 to 24, with new categories such as quantum computing and aerospace and satellite technology being introduced. The firms responsible for managing the index are currently soliciting feedback until September 18, with the changes expected to be announced by the end of the month.

Hong Kong has recently witnessed a surge in significant Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) from Chinese AI-related companies seeking overseas funding. For instance, last month, Chinese data centre supplier Zhongji InnoLight successfully raised approximately $6.8 million through its debut offering, marking Hong Kong's biggest public offering in seven years.
