Heavy rainfall returns to Mumbai, surpasses 2000-mm mark; more showers expected today, August 12

Mumbai has experienced a resurgence of heavy rainfall, with the suburbs recording more than 2,000 mm of precipitation, surpassing the typical yearly average. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in the Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and Raigad regions due to the revival of monsoon currents.

In the Santacruz station, rainfall has amounted to 2020 mm, representing 85% of the seasonal average of 2,390.5 mm expected between June and September. The Colaba station has recorded 1,675.8 mm, accounting for 80% of the average rainfall of 2,102 mm over the same period. Tuesday's rain activity intensified after the city received 20 mm of rainfall between Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Strong westerly winds have facilitated the influx of moisture, contributing to the surge in monsoon activity, according to Skymet Weather Services. The heavy showers have led to a noticeable decrease in heat levels, with maximum temperatures dropping nearly five degrees in a single day, reaching a low of 27.1 degrees in Santacruz and 27.6 degrees in Colaba on Tuesday.
