Haruna Iddrisu to engage GAUA as government seeks end to university admin

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu is set to meet with the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) in an effort to resolve the ongoing strike. The dispute has arisen due to perceived disparities in Market Premium and other allowances between teaching and non-teaching senior staff at public universities.

GAUA insists that these discrepancies must be rectified to ensure equitable treatment of university personnel. The anticipated meeting will convene the Education Ministry, GAUA representatives, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to brainstorm potential resolutions. Government officials are hopeful that constructive discussions will address the association's grievances and facilitate the termination of the strike.

Speaking to Citi FM, the Education Minister's spokesperson, Hashmin Mohammed, confirmed that the meeting is expected to occur this week, stating, "I think that meeting should happen sometime this week so that we can find a solution to this issue." However, GAUA remains cautious, warning that it will not unilaterally suspend the strike based on government assurances alone.

They require tangible measures to substantiate any commitments. Michael Owusu Ansah, President of the University of Ghana chapter of GAUA, expressed skepticism, stating that the association has grown wary of empty promises without clear timelines. "If it's just 'trust me and give me time and I'll come back to you,' I'm afraid this time GAUA may not be persuaded by words."
