Government reaffirms commitment to empower Ghanaian youth on International Youth Day

On International Youth Day celebrated on August 12, 2026, the Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment of Ghana reaffirmed its dedication to providing opportunities for the nation's young people to cultivate their abilities, actively participate in the country's progress, and prosper in the digital era. This commitment was made as Ghana joined the global community in observing International Youth Day, which this year was themed "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations."

The national focus was "Rebuilding Values, Inspiring Patriotism: Empowering the Youth in the Digital Age."

The Ministry highlighted that young individuals, despite growing up in diverse communities and encountering distinct challenges, share a universal desire for quality education, stable employment, innovation, dignity, inclusivity, and a brighter future. This commonality, as stated in a statement from the Ministry's Public Relations Unit, aligns with the national theme, emphasizing the importance of restoring positive values, enhancing patriotism, and equipping young people with the necessary digital skills and prospects to thrive in a world increasingly driven by technology.

Acknowledging the resilience, creativity, and determination demonstrated by youth across various sectors such as business, technology, agriculture, arts, sports, public service, and community leadership, the Ministry asserted that young people should be seen not only as future leaders but as proactive agents of change. They are already addressing local and national issues and contributing to Ghana's social and economic advancement.

The Ministry outlined five key priorities for its youth empowerment strategy, including enhancing skill development and lifelong learning opportunities, fostering youth entrepreneurship and innovation, promoting decent employment and economic inclusion, strengthening youth involvement in governance and civic engagement, and advancing mental health awareness and psychosocial support. It further pledged to ensure that no young person is left behind, regardless of their location, gender, ability, or socioeconomic status.

The global theme, "Different Contexts, Common Aspirations," called for increased collaboration among government bodies, the private sector, development partners, civil society organizations, educational institutions, and communities to create an environment where every young person could flourish. The Ministry also urged stakeholders to unite in rebuilding values like integrity, discipline, hard work, and patriotism while empowering young people to utilize the digital age's opportunities responsibly and productively.

As Ghana commemorates International Youth Day, the Ministry encouraged young people to strive for excellence, embrace innovation, and continue making significant contributions to national development. The Ministry emphasized that the varied experiences of young people should enrich the nation, while their shared aspirations should bring them together to build a prosperous, inclusive, and resilient Ghana where every young person has the chance to realize their full potential.
